WE'VE GOT GAME!

Are you a sports fan? Specifically, are you a football fan? If so you'll enjoy the Berwick Area High School Bulldogs. The "Dawgs" are the first six-time state champions and the first high school football team to be named as three-time national champs by USA Today.

Professional fans can also enjoy Arena Football II. The Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Pioneers play their home games in the fabulous Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.

All the excitement of professional baseball can be experienced with the new Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees. The Triple A minor league club of the New York Yankees, the Yankees will be a perennial crowd-pleaser every spring, summer and fall.

How about hockey? During the season, the hottest team to hit the ice is the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. The AHL farm team of the Pittsburgh Penguins, the local Penguins succeeded in making it to the Calder Cup Finals in 2000/2001, just their second year of existence!

For those who live for the thrill of a live harness race, there's always action to be found at The Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs. Whether you come to play or watch, The Downs is guaranteed to provide an unforgettable night at the races.

And speaking of racing. You can slip into high gear and catch the fastest growing sport in America at the Pocono International Raceway, which hosts NASCAR, SCCA, and IMSA racing.

And if you'd rather not be a couch potato you can test your mettle at the national class Steamtown Marathon, a 26.2-mile USATF-certified marathon held in Scranton every October or at the Wilkes-Barre Triathlon held every August at Harvey's Lake.

Enjoying the great outdoors

From our state parks and game lands, lakes, ponds and streams to our mountains and forests, natural beauty can be found everywhere in Northeastern Pennsylvania.

This means our residents can hike, bike, camp, hunt, boat, ski, sled, golf, skydive, skate, swim and play without having to travel far to do it.

Our largest body of water is Lake Wallenpaupack, measuring 13 1/2 miles long with 52 miles of shoreline. "The Paupack" features hundreds of acres of forestlands, wildlife, walking trails, campsites, and boat slips. When it comes to boating and water activities, this popular body of water has few equals.

For the cold weather enthusiasts, we have numerous ski resorts, ponds for ice-skating and hills for tobogganing.

Every year, thousands of people flock to the Sno Mountain, which Snow Country Magazine consistently ranks as one of the best snowmaking resorts in the Mid-Atlantic Region.

Camelback Ski Area, meanwhile, represents the biggest ski, snowboard and snow tubing area in the Poconos. In the summer and fall, thousands also flock to the Camelbeach Waterpark. Other ski area's include Big Boulder and Jack Frost.

Those who prefer extreme sports can enjoy snowboarding, whitewater rafting or paintball.

The Penn's Northeast region is also internationally known for its resort and family-oriented recreational facilities

Many residents take advantage of Knoebels Amusement Resort. This 75-year-old park has been thrilling patrons for generations and was named the 2nd best amusement park in the country by Amusement Today Magazine.

Those who'd like an American History adventure for the whole family can take the Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour. Daring souls can descend 300 feet beneath the earth's surface and travel through three different veins of coal in an actual mine. And there's more fun with history to be had at Steamtown National Historic Site, the world's largest collection of steam locomotives and related memorabilia. Managed by the National Park Service, this $70 million complex features a working roundhouse, museums, repair shops and steam locomotive rides through the Penn's Northeast countryside.

ALL OF LIFE'S INDEED A STAGE…

…And our residents have no problem being the players! Support for a strong cultural atmosphere represents a vital part of the life of our community. Galleries that specialize in a variety of artistic styles, from contemporary to traditional can be found throughout the area. The performing arts thrive here. Everything from classical to jazz music, ballet to modern dance, and professional to community theatre are regularly patronized by local residents.

If you like pop music, you can catch internationally famous music acts, from Britney Spears and Kid Rock to the Allman Brothers and Kenny Rogers, at the Toyota Pavilion at Montage Mountain.

Those who thirst for world-class performing arts will be thrilled by The Mountain Laurel Center for the Performing Arts. Located on a pastoral 675-acre property with an 85-acre lake as its centerpiece, the center is a showcase where diverse artists and audiences are brought together to experience the finest in music, dance and theater.

The Mohegan Sun Arena, the F.M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts, the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic, the Scranton Cultural Center and several theatres, museums, libraries and art galleries further enrich the region's quality of life.

SO? WHAT'S FOR DINNER?

When it comes to getting out and having a good time, let's not forget to treat our taste buds! The fact is, these little guys can have it all in Northeastern Pennsylvania, which offers an incredible variety of dining experiences, from the traditional chains and restaurants, to locally renown family eateries to establishments that have garnered national recognition and praise for their food and atmosphere.
