Berwick, Columbia County, PA -
The Berwick Industrial Development Association has been awarded a $935,000 state grant to demolish two aging buildings at its industrial complex and prepare the site for future redevelopment.
The funding, announced by Governor Josh Shapiro and State Representative Robert Leadbeter, will support the removal of two former manufacturing structures once used by American Car & Foundry—an iconic part of Berwick’s industrial history.
One of the buildings, known locally as “the schoolhouse,” served for decades as a hub where workers applied for jobs and collected paychecks. The second structure, previously used for manufacturing, has deteriorated to the point where it is no longer safe for use, even for storage.
Both buildings contain lead and asbestos and have suffered extensive damage from years of flooding and water infiltration, making rehabilitation no longer feasible.
Located at the north end of the BIDA complex, the site currently occupies approximately 14,400 square feet. Once cleared, however, it has the potential to support significantly larger development—potentially accommodating a new building of up to 125,000 square feet.
The project is part of a broader strategy to modernize industrial sites and position Berwick for continued manufacturing growth.
“By tearing down outdated, underused buildings, we can prepare modern sites and send a clear message that Columbia County is open for business,” said Rep. Leadbeter. “Strategic redevelopment strengthens our competitiveness, attracts new investment, and lays the groundwork for sustained economic growth and family-sustaining jobs.”
Local officials say interest in the site is already strong, with both existing companies looking to expand and new businesses exploring opportunities in the area.
While demolition will move forward, BIDA is also working to preserve elements of the site’s history. Plans are in place to salvage remaining artifacts, including wooden molds once used in the production of railroad cars and tanks, with select items already preserved at the Stuart Tank Memorial Museum.
The grant funding is provided through the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development’s Pennsylvania Strategic Investments to Enhance Sites (PA SITES) program, which supports the development of shovel-ready locations for business growth.
The BIDA project is part of a larger statewide investment in site development, including additional funding awarded to regional partners for industrial site expansion in Central and Northeastern Pennsylvania.
As Berwick continues to build on its manufacturing legacy, projects like this highlight the region’s commitment to revitalization, competitiveness, and long-term economic opportunity.
