Hanover Twp., Luzerne County, PA -
Itoh Denki USA, a manufacturer of motorized conveyor rollers and modules, marked a significant milestone this week with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at its U.S. headquarters in Hanover Township's Hanover Crossings Industrial Park. The event celebrated the completion of a 73,600-square-foot expansion to its manufacturing facility, nearly doubling the company’s office and production space and creating 50 new jobs in the region.
Founded in Japan in 1946, Itoh Denki pioneered the development of motorized drive roller (MDR) technology and has grown into a global leader in material handling solutions. The company established its U.S. headquarters in Wilkes-Barre in 1996 to meet rising demand in the American market, later relocating operations to its current facility in 2016.
“This expansion was necessary to allow us the capacity we need to meet the increasing demand for industrial automation,” said Rich Kosik, President of Itoh Denki USA. “Today’s fulfillment and distribution centers require low-noise workspaces, and the Itoh Power Moller internally powered roller is becoming the top choice for material handling conveyors. The tremendous energy savings recognized on these applications is an additional bonus.”
The celebration drew company leaders from both the United States and Japan, along with state and international dignitaries, including Rick Siger, Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) Secretary; Ted Itoh, Owner and President of Itoh Denki Japan Co.; Kazuma Yamamoto, Director of Economic Division for the Consulate General of Japan in New York; and Satoshi Miura, President of the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) New York.
During the ceremony, the U.S. and Japanese national anthems were played, followed by remarks underscoring the company’s commitment to Northeastern Pennsylvania and the global partnerships that make such growth possible.
“Itoh Denki USA is truly the keystone of our overseas operations,” said Ted Itoh, noting that the company’s upcoming 80th anniversary marks a significant moment in its history. “We are making a strong commitment to make our business presence bigger here in the United States.”
Satoshi Miura highlighted the broader significance of Itoh Denki’s expansion, pointing to the strong and growing relationship between Pennsylvania and Japan. “This enduring economic partnership continues to create jobs, drive innovation, and strengthen communities across the country,” he said. “Pennsylvania, in particular, has cultivated a strong and growing relationship with Japan. The Commonwealth is home to over 189 Japanese-affiliated companies, contributing sectors ranging from manufacturing and logistics to life sciences and energy.”
Rick Siger emphasized the impact of foreign direct investment on Pennsylvania’s economy. “Projects like this create tax revenue so local governments can support their people,” he said. “More jobs are more opportunities for local workers. A stable career with a growing company like this means people can plant their own roots, buy a house, provide for their families, which, in turn, strengthens our economy and our communities.”
Kazuma Yamamoto called the expansion “a testament to the company’s tireless efforts” and praised Itoh Denki for cultivating strong ties with the local community. “The success of companies like Itoh Denki deepens the partnership between Japan and the United States,” he said.
John Augustine, President & CEO of Penn’s Northeast, added, “Itoh Denki’s decision to grow here is a perfect example of how global companies can thrive in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Our central location, skilled workforce, and collaborative approach to economic development make this region a true gateway for international investment. We are proud to have supported Itoh Denki throughout their journey and look forward to their continued success.”
With this $10 million expansion, Itoh Denki has increased its footprint to nearly 120,000 square feet, enabling the company to meet surging demand for energy-efficient and technologically advanced automation solutions. The investment not only solidifies Itoh Denki’s presence in Northeastern Pennsylvania but also highlights the region’s strategic advantages - central location, skilled workforce, and business-friendly environment - that continue to attract global manufacturers.
