Roberts and Makowski are deeply involved in the regional community and they are strong supporters of and advocates for the mission of United Way of Wyoming Valley.
United Way President/CEO Bill Jones said the dedication to improving the region which both Roberts and Makowski exhibit make them natural leaders for the Annual Campaign, aimed at building community participation in United Way's Poverty to Possibility Movement, which is focused on reducing childhood poverty in the Wyoming Valley.
“Tom and Alana bring great energy to everything they set out to do and are passionate about helping children and families,” Jones said. “They understand that the United Way's work is vital to our community and we are thrilled that they've enthusiastically seized the challenge of leading our 2019 Annual Campaign.”
United Way of Wyoming Valley's 2019-2020 Campaign will
kick off on September 12, 2019 with a celebration at the
Mohegan Sun Pocono Keystone Ballroom.
Alana Roberts
Alana is the Regional Affairs Director for the Northeast Region for PPL Corp., where she is responsible for corporate citizenship, community involvement, media relations and legislative affairs.
Roberts said she is a passionate advocate for the community, serving on the Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Business and Industry, NEPA Alliance, The Institute for Public Policy at Wilkes University, Penn's Northeast and numerous regional organizations.
Roberts also works with a number of local youth sports teams as a coach and volunteer. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science from Juniata College, and resides in Scott Township with her husband and two sons.
"I saw the important work which United Way of Wyoming Valley is doing to fight childhood poverty and had to get involved,” Roberts said. “United Way is already touching the lives of thousands of children in need in our community, and I'm determined to do all I can to advance its Poverty to Possibility movement and the programs and initiatives it supports.”
Tom Makowski
Makowski is Vice President of Business Development and General Counsel for Borton-Lawson Engineering & Architecture.
He is a former member of the United Way of Wyoming Valley Board of Directors, and presently serves on the Boards of Directors for the Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Business and Industry, Penn's Northeast, the Greater Wilkes-Barre Development Corp., Ecumenical Enterprises Inc., and serves as a Member of the Northeast Pennsylvania Leadership Fund.
Makowski was elected to two terms on the Luzerne County Board of Commissioners, serving as Chairman of the Board. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in History from King's College, and his Juris Doctorate from Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C.
Makowski resides in Hanover Township with his wife, and two daughters.
“ The work of United Way of Wyoming Valley is vital to our community and dear to my heart, that's why I've supported it for decades,” Makowski said. “But with the staggering rate of childhood poverty in the Wyoming Valley, everyone who is interested in our future and in improving the lives of children in poverty needs to support them as well.”
